Here are a bunch of classic Tex Avery “takes” from various shorts, mostly “Homesteader Droopy”. The surprise for me when studying these old shorts is how they really weren’t locked to the model sheets, yet everything feels on brand. These days marketing guys are so hell bent on controlling the brand, that they never let allow any fluctuations from the model sheets, to the point that they kill what makes a cartoon work. I had an exec tell me once that Rattfink wasn’t even supposed to be green, yet the DVD set they just put out had him green on the cover! Now imagine trying to play with proportions like they did below? The hand sizes are almost in a constant state of flux, yet it fits the character, especially during a “take”.
